Many people are often surprised by the substantial costs of volunteering abroad. You can typically be expected to cover your travel costs, room and board, and the additional administrative expenses of the volunteer program. Don't let this get you down! Volunteering your time and money abroad can be a life-changing experience for both you and the community you work in. Even better, there are still many ways to raise money that will help off-set your costs. Here are 10 great tips to get you started volunteering abroad.
1. Think, "who do I know?"
Successful fundraising costs little and reaches a wide audience. Always think: "who can help me?" For example, do you have a family member who works in a large company that could sponsor you? Do you have a friend who could provide a venue for a fundraising event? Start by making a list of everyone you know and how they might be able to contribute toward your volunteer goals.
2. Always keep your reasons for volunteering in mind.
A truly passionate desire to help those less fortunate than yourselves can always help bring in donations. Hit the pavement and let your goals and passions speak for themselves.
3. Produce a leaflet.
Clearly explain your reasons for volunteering abroad in a leaflet. Take it a step further and include some interesting information and pictures about the project you hope to join. Include handing out this leaflet in all of your fundraising activities.
4. Have a goal.
Start with a clear goal as to how much you need to raise from each fundraising activity. Follow up and assess how much you expected to raise against what you actually do. Some ideas work, others won't, but don't repeat the same mistakes.
5. Ask for specific donations.
But don't stand by them. Asking for a specific amount will give your donors a benchmark and allow you to calculate how much you need to raise from each person/organization to achieve your target. It may help to go after your biggest benefactor first – people often follow the leader.
6. Write well-targeted letters.
Address letters and emails to individuals, and individuals within companies, asking for their support.
7. Hold an (inexpensive!) event
And make it wacky – like the lion conservation volunteer who sat in a tub of cat-food! Draw attention to your goals, get sponsorship and give publicity to any companies who have already donated to your cause. Local press coverage can also be useful.
8. Always offer something in return
Turn the situation into a win-win for every sponsor who makes a donation. This could be as simple as sending them a copy of your diary via email when you are abroad, or giving a presentation about your experiences when you return.
9. Plan ahead.
To avoid missing your targets.
10. Use your time wisely
Fundraisers generally use as much time as they have to achieve their goals. If you are on a tight deadline, you will just be working that bit harder!
There are so many ways to find all the cash you need to take you on your travels. So don’t let money get in the way – simply put your fundraising hat on and you’ll be on your way in no time!
