Interview with Jaime Marin, Program Director in Belize
GO: How did you come to work for Kaya Volunteer in Belize?
Jaime: I joined Kaya through a colleague who was the previous representative and then moved to the US and recommended me. He and I worked together at another NGO called Pro-World Belize. Before that I was the manager for one of their community partners called Barzakh Falah, a sustainable farm for a children home and youth transitional site. I still am still their site manager and work in sustainable solutions for buildings, water, sewage, wind power and horticulture. I was also a volunteer during the Haiti relief efforts through Hearts of Haiti, where we built a school for a children's home.
GO: What needs are volunteers currently addressing in Belize?
Jaime: There are almost unlimited areas that volunteers work in Belize. First and foremost volunteers help social work organizations that would put off certain projects due to labour costs. This typically includes data input or management, construction work, web development, and clinical assistance for those with medical qualifications.
GO: What can volunteers do after their time in Belize to continue making a difference?
Jaime: Great question! Definitely stay in contact with their volunteer partners. Encourage there continued work and enthusiasm. Share their learning experience and there personal knowledge with the partners for continued improved institutional development.
GO: Describe a typical volunteer program in Belize.
Jaime: A typical volunteer program would include meeting a host family, sharing meals and stories, going off to work sites (pack lunched in hand), submerging into culture. 4-6hrs to work. Volunteers are always willing to learn about the diverse culture of Belize, are always willing to be flexible with the differences in attitudes, work ethics, but most of all are very cooperative with their partners.
