After thoroughly researching volunteer abroad organizations I chose The Humanity Exchange and couldn't be happier with the choice I made. They provide value for the amount. Accommodations were kept spectacularly clean. I felt safe and my Exchange Manager was always available when I had questions.
Ultimately, I recommend THEX not just because of value and an outstanding experience, but because they were one of the few organizations that was willing to work with my university. Their head office communicated with my practicum advisor, completed all paperwork, and provided me with a recommendation letter. They were professional and clearly experienced when it came to dealing with universities. So if you want to get course credit at your university for your volunteer program abroad, I recommend The Humanity Exchange.

The Cameroonian staff at the school were more than welcoming, helpful, and accommodating in every possible way and I am 100% happy that I worked with this NGO the four months that I was teaching/living in Cameroon. However, The Humanity Exchange provided no training before my arrival, as well as no in-country orientation during my first weeks in Cameroon. I was expected to read a Peace Corps volunteer manual before I left my home country that was not country-specific and spoke about cultural differences in a broad/vague manner.
If this is your first time volunteering abroad, I recommend that you either a) find a different organization that provides sufficient and substantial orientation/training or b) research an NGO that you can make arrangements with directly.
One of the two reasons why I do not regret working with THEX is the fact that the international volunteers who I became friends with while I was abroad made the "adjustment-to-a-new-country-and-culture" process a lot easier for me, given the fact that THEX had done nothing on their end to make that a smooth transition. Also, I cannot say enough great things about the NGO I happened to work with in Cameroon. One of the other THEX volunteers were not as fortunate during her first weeks and was placed with an organization that had never worked with a volunteer before and clearly had poor management/judgment when it came to that....in other words, they only valued her money. You'd expect your international development organization to straighten those issues out beforehand and ensure that everyone is on the same page in terms of expectations but of course, with THEX's track record with capacity-building, it's not a surprise.
