Program Description

Volunteers in Cameroon with Love Volunteers

Description

Cameroon needs volunteers in the following areas:

Working with Children
Assisting small groups of children, by playing with educational toys, supervising art projects, and reading stories. Children are also taught life skills to enable them to aim to support themselves, things like raising chickens and weaving.

Teaching in Schools
Assisting with the remedial reading and classroom reading programs, organizing special days (sports, art and music), and helping coordinate the sponsorship program.

Assisting with teaching computer skills in class, fixing computers, and teaching local staff new programs and skills.

Setting up and running peer education workshops and conducting follow-up to make sure that the participants are passing on their newly-acquired information.

Community initiatives
Community sports for development conveying the message of HIV/AIDS and addressing other important social issues through sports.

Livelihood Project working on behalf of villagers to get needed advice from experts, helping to find new ways for villagers to supplement their incomes, and fundraising to help get their projects started

Fundraising searching for grants and other funding sources to support the NGO’s many activities and finding donors for the sponsorship program.

Volunteer Coordination serving as a facilitator in a 6-month + position for other volunteers and helping to ensure the sustainability of programs.

In practice, volunteers usually choose to divide their time between a number of different projects depending on their interests, abilities, and project needs.

Highlights

Cameroon has experienced very rapid urbanization has left casualties in its wake with HIV/Aids leaving large numbers of children orphaned and extreme poverty forcing children to survive without family from an early age. Cameroon schools, orphanages and medical services rely heavily on volunteers.
Our NGO partner offers many unique and innovative child and youth-centred programs that range from one time school construction projects to long term livelihood projects and from computer classes to vocational training for underprivileged youth. Love Volunteers shares their commitment to build a strong, stable and positive community in which members are valued.

Volunteers in Cameroon can enjoy a wonderful African experience in a country that has lots to offer yet has not really been discovered by the large tour groups and its easy to get around with the official languages being English and French.

As in everything in life, a lot depends of yourself. That is especially the case when it comes to volunteering in Cameroon, out of my own and my friends experiences. You can be creative and realize yourself in many ways if you take initiative and really make clear what you want and intend to do. Biggest difficultie related to volunteering for me and many others her has defenetly been poor communication and for this reason it is extremely important to be active in order to get the maximum out of it. I also believe that the longer you stay, bigger the chances are to really have a positive impact on the environment. Overall, by doing more, you get more.
