Interview with Ashton Judis, ProWorld volunteer alum

Ashton Judis volunteered from March 9-17th 2012. He went to Defiance College and now works as a Director of Service Leadership Program.

GO: Why did you decide to volunteer with ProWorld in Costa Rica?

Ashton: We decided to volunteer with ProWorld because we were informed about them through the NAFSA Conference last year. We thought that ProWorld's mission and vision aligned with the Service Leadership Program's goals in terms of a service trip abroad. I also spoke with other institutions that traveled with ProWorld and they all had very positive things to say and share about their experiences.

GO: Describe your day to day activities as a volunteer.

Ashton: Day to day activities as a volunteer were very fun. Each day of volunteering we had several projects to work so each volunteer could choose between a variety of activities that they would like to be part of. ProWorld was very helpful in allowing us to choose which volunteer opportunities that we wanted to be part of then ProWorld did all of the arranging of logistics in terms of getting supplies, ensuring that everyone had something to do, etc. It was a very great process where all the volunteers were able to participate at all times and were able to see the impact instantly. It was a great experience.

The volunteer days usually lasted from about 8am-3:30pm because we worked in the school. We would work in the morning, take a break for lunch, and work until mid afternoon. We worked on projects such as painting a mural, teaching English in the classrooms, painting hopscotch, refinishing tables and desks, building a garden, and painting safety and security lines in the school.

GO: How has this experience helped you grow personally and professionally?

Ashton: This experience has impacted my future professionally by allowing me to work with a great company that has allowed for our experience to everything from cultural, meaningful, helpful, useful, informational, and more than we could have ever imagined. ProWorld really offers an experience where people can experience so many things in a short period of time. Professionally and personally I would highly recommend ProWorld. I was extremely impacted by each of the individuals that we got to work with while we were in Costa Rica. I am continuing a relationship with the school we worked in, and I will forever remember the individuals that I met, worked with, and got to know.

An Unforgettable Experience

The most rewarding experience Ive ever had. The food was typical of Costa Rica, rice and beans, but was very good. I felt safe the entire time. We worked most of the time so I did not experience the social scene of Costa Rica but I could hear it from the hostel! They live very much in the here and now. We arrived in Costa Rica and stayed in a hostel for the first two nights experiencing the culture and history of San Jose then left for the coast. We arrived in Moin in the Limon province. We stayed at Paradero Eco tours for the rest of the week where we created a hatchery for leather-back sea turtles and participated in beach clean up to allow for easier nesting. We went on nightly beach patrols to prevent poachers from taking the turtle eggs. During the day we cared for the animals on the refuge such as sloths, white faced monkeys, and owls. It was secluded so we needed to pack everything we would need. I would definitely recommend taking sunscreen and bug spray. The local people were very nice and accepting. We went to a local school for a day and experienced the humility and poverty of the people there. The children had made their musical instruments from garbage and tried to give them to us to take home. I enjoyed myself immensely, I have never felt so great about volunteering. I know that I made a difference not only in the lives of the animals, but also in the lives of the school children we met. The program was phenomenal. All of my needs were met and I felt the price was very affordable and definitely worth it. The only thing I would have done differently would have been to stay longer. This program has changed me as a person and made me more globally aware.

Our experience with ProWorld was amazing from the beginning to the end. ProWorld was extremely accommodating and helpful with the planning process. The team was supportive, informational, and extremely friendly throughout the entire process. While on the ground, the trip was very organized and the staff was extremely helpful. We were always busy and had the opportunity to give back while also experience a lot of the culture and fun aspects of Costa Rica. The volunteer experience was very meaningful, impacting, and rewarding. Our trip truly went without a glitch and I honestly believe that is because of ProWorld and the Costa Rican Language Academy and how competent and helpful the staff truly are.

My day to day

A typical day for me was waking up in the morning and catching the bus to CRLA, our language school. I had three hours of Spanish language classes Monday through Thursday with only one other student in my class. This was extremely helpful because we had the full attention of the teacher and i was able to ask questions more comfortably. After class, i ate lunch and caught the bus into the city. From there i caught another bus into the barrio that the orphanage was located in (that was my assignment, volunteering in an orphanage). I stayed there for two hours each day and played with the children. Usually we did very simple things such as running around or playing with each others hair. It really doesen't need to be anything elaborate, these children are in deprivation of affection and just need people to play with them! Thankfully the orphanage is in good repair and all the children know and take care of each other which is really sweet. The mothers of the houses work really hard to provide for the children as well and i think it makes a difference. When i left the orphanage each day, it was around 5pm, i caught the bus back into the city, and caught another bus to my house. I ate dinner with my family, did homework, watched a little tv and then went to bed.

I can't stress enough the help and support I received from the staff and project leaders in this program. I did not feel uncomfortable or confused at any point and they did everything possible to make my experience not only interesting and worthwhile but easy. I felt that the project had a real impact on the community and working with the children in the orphanage was one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. I would absolutely recommend using ProWorld and am planning another trip in the near future with them.
