ProWorld Volunteer Projects in Ghana
Description
Volunteer abroad in Ghana with ProWorld! Cape Coast, set amongst beautiful beaches and home to Cape Coast Castle, previously one of the largest slave holding sites in the world, is a town steeped in history and contradictions. While access to basic education, particularly for girls, has increased in recent years, access to secondary education remains limited in many rural areas. Schools remain vastly underfunded and the quality of education continues to suffer. Spend two weeks with ProWorld and our partner organizations to help improve access and quality of education in the areas which need it most. Project work may include classroom assistance, curriculum development, helping with after school programs, or improving school infrastructure. You will also have the opportunity to explore Cape Coast's pristine beaches, castles and colorful markets.

My experience through proworld was an unforgettable one. I was given just the right amount of independence and support! I was on my own for everything I felt up to, but the staff was always there to answer my calls and my questions! The once a week dinner with the staff was awesome, because it was a great time to talk to them about my personal experience and to learn more about the culture. I feel as though my time spent with proworld was very productive and I would recommend it to any world traveler.

Our group of 15 students was divided into 5 teams. Each team had a specific focus that resulted in a sustainable project for a special needs education school in Cape Coast, Ghana. On a regular day, over our two-week stay, groups immersed themselves into the community to bring awareness of the values of children and adults with disabilities, such as cerebral palsy and autism. We assisted children in sowing purses and taught them a head-band pattern to add variety to their business. One group established partnerships with local resorts, places in which the students could sell their products to tourists for 100% profit. A website and social network profile were also developed and an explicit instruction guide was provided to the school administrators explaining how to keep these up to date. Finances were also detailed and a system was implemented to keep track of their inventory and monies. Throughout it all, students also invited community members to an event that was hosted on the final day. There was a great turn-out and people became aware of the needs of the school and showed appreciation to very special people--those with special needs.
Outside of service time, students enjoyed interacting with local Ghanians by attending local soccer games, shopping, dining at local restaurants, and having heart-felt conversations with native ProWorld staff. Ghanians are respectable and welcoming people who acknowledge one's presence and genuinely enjoy showing you what's best of their country.
PS. The fruit was amazing! I'll never forget how great the pineapple was there--it never made my lips sting.
