Program Description

Volunteer in a Women's Shelter in Guatemala

Description

United Planet's Quest Volunteer Abroad program offers you or your group a life-changing opportunity to interact with local communities through customized work experiences, cultural activities, and home stays. United Planet Quests are offered in 50 countries from 1-52 weeks.

Volunteer in a variety of different locations while immersing yourself in the culture of Guatemala! Due to its large indigenous population, Guatemala maintains a rich culture. You will be staying in the heart of the Sierra Madre mountains in the city of Quetzaltenango (abbreviated Xela).

Interview with Alida Gomez, volunteer alum

Alida Adams, 25, volunteered in Quetzaltenango (Xela) Guatemala, January 2007-August 2007. She is from Thetford, VT; living in Taunton MA.

GO: Why did you decide to volunteer with United Planet in Guatemala?

Alida: In college, I was very interested in working for a nonprofit organization in Latin America. Instead of doing a traditional study abroad program, I decided to look for volunteer opportunites to get the experience before graduating. I took summer courses to get ahead, took a leave of absence from my college, planned my trip, and went off to Central America.

I originally found a couple of volunteer programs that I was interested in. United Planet's program in Guatemala happened to be how I started my travels. I was only supposed to be there two months, but I had such an incredible experience that I canceled my volunteer plans in Ecuador and stayed in Guatemala for almost 8 months.

GO: Describe your day to day activities as a volunteer.

Alida: For the first two months, I volunteered in a shelter for women and children who had escaped domestic violence. I was there from 8am-1pm daily. I helped children with their homework and helped them get ready for school. I arranged field trips for the children- to the zoo, to play soccer, to see a movie, to go out for pizza. When possible, I would take one or two children out of the shelter to run an errand with me or to buy bread for everyone. They spent a lot of time in the shelter, so it was important to me to faciliate time outside of the shelter as well.

For the rest of my time in Guatemala, I helped open a laundromat for women in the shelter to run. This included finding a location, working on a lease, consulting the city government for permission, cleaning and painting the space, purchasing the equipment, etc. The laundromat is managed by a couple of women living in the shelter so they earn a salary, and the rest of the profits go to the shelter as a whole.

GO: What advice do you have for future volunteers?

Alida: Be creative--there are so many little things we can all do that will make a difference. The kids will love any activity you suggest.

Suspend expectations--I was constantly shocked by the living conditions in the shelter; it was truly depressing. You just have to get used to it and not be put off by it.

Think long term--I loved playing with the children every day, but I was frustrated that I wasn't doing anything sustainable. I didn't want to return to the US and have it be like I was never there. I hope the laundromat will have long-term benefits to all the families living in the shelter.

Immerse yourself in the location--And take advantage of everything around you! I tried all sorts of amazing foods; I took salsa and meringue lessons, I went to all the home soccer games I could, I traveled around the country on long weekends, I came home fluent in Spanish; I climbed two volcanoes and swam in a cave. Every element of the country and the culture came together and made for a life-changing experience.

GO: How has this experience helped you grow personally and professionally?

Alida: I ended up returning to Guatemala three more times following my time volunteering with United Planet (Winter 2007-2008, June 2008, September-November 2008). I fell in love with everything about the country. I think about Guatemala and the city I lived in every day.

While I am not currently working for an international nonprofit, I did spend a year with one building high schools in Nicaragua. I am confident that the experiences will help me down the road in terms of working for a nonprofit again. I currently work in the Center for International Engageemnt at Bridgewater State University and I know my unique international experience helped me stand out and secure the position.

Highlights

United Planets Quest's offers volunteers a unique blend of work, cultural immersion, and fun. All ages and skill levels are invited to apply. Everyone has something to offer!

Guatemala Womens Shelter Quest:

This is a great opportunity for social workers and psychologists or people who are interested in empowering women. This shelter is a network of facilities designed for the use of women and their children who have fled a situation of abuse. The shelter is managed entirely by women and funded by private donations and has a volunteer staff that works there and runs day care facilities. Both places are managed by a Volunteer Coordinator (the volunteer with the most experience).

Work includes assisting in day care or in after school tutoring and activities for the children. Volunteers can help children with their homework before and after school. Volunteers also organize recreational and creative activities for the children and their mothers. Volunteers do not need any previous experience!

Teaching English, Gaining a new family of friends

I spent 11 weeks teaching English in Quetzaltenango (locally referred to as "Xela"), Guatemala. Choosing this project proved to be one of the best decisions I've ever made. I gained valuable volunteer experience, helped nearly 200 girls to begin learning English, and gained a family of friends that made such an impact on my life that I'm planning to return within the next year.

My volunteer duties included teaching six classes of English to 4th through 6th grade female elementary students. I taught Monday through Thursday. I also participated in special school activities (for example, I was invited to be a judge in their annual talent contest and Carnival celebration). During weekends I usually spent taking day trips or hanging out with my local friends.

My support system was excellent! The coordination of the United Planet volunteer program is linked to the Kie Balam Spanish School which organized my housing, one-on-one Spanish classes, and cultural experiences/outings. They took care of me every step of the way from the moment I arrived in Guatemala, and they always seemed eager to assist me in whatever needs I had (medical, organizational, linguistic, etc.). I now refer to them as family.

My host home was very comfortable, with a spacious room, wi-fi, and three hot meals prepared for me everyday. And the meals were catered to my tastes and were much, much more than rice and beans (even though I ate my share, but that's because I love rice and beans, haha). My space was respected, and I was treated as family. I would return there anytime and know that the other homes used by the program are with extremely friendly families.

The foreigner will feel very comfortable in Xela. There are constantly dozens of Spanish school students from other parts of North America and Europe if you desire/need that sort of social interaction. Or, if like me, you prefer to spend most of your time with locals, they are among the most hospitable/friendly people you could ever meet. They'll be happy to teach you how to cook local food, go out with you to work on your Salsa dancing (a popular social/nightclub activity), or guide you to the best late night taco spots.

I highly recommend this program for anyone who wants a volunteer experience that is both satisfying and rewarding (both for the local community and for you). Viva Guatemala and viva Xela!

Amazing Experience in Xela

I volunteered with Nuevos Horizontes for 8 months and I still think about it every day. It was an absolutely incredible experience.
*Host family was fantastic and helped me learn Spanish much quicker
*Spanish School (Kie Balam) was an amazing resource. I didn't take many formal lessons, as I was mostly working with Nuevos Horizontes, but Marlo still taught me so much and included me in all the school's activities
*Xela is an amazing, beautiful city. Though during my last trip there, I did notice and hear about more robbery and theft. I was robbed, but I just gave them everything I had and never felt scared for my safety.
