Program Description
Work with children and disabled kids in Bali
Description
What does the project do?
The Yayasan Widya Guna foundation for education was established in 2006 and is responsible for the operation of the WINS programme, where you will be volunteering. WINS stands for ‘orphans in Indonesia to school’ and was started in 2004 by Gil Rijnenberg and Ketut Sadua. Their primary goal is to give the children of Bali the opportunity to obtain an education and to break the cycle of poverty. At the weekend the child care centre also takes in and cares for disabled children.
It is greatly beneficial to the children and members of the project to learn English and other new skills, and to interact with people from a different culture. Volunteers are needed to improve the knowledge of the children in all areas and to expose them to different cultures from around the world.
Highlights
* Living on possibly the most beautiful island on earth!
* Seeing a very different side to the island and making a real contribution to the community
* Exploring Bali - beaches, amazing scenery, temples and fantastic people
Once a traditional village, Ubud has morphed into a bustling town with a thriving art culture. Various art galleries pepper the streets and you'll find yourself spoilt for choice with a vast array of souvenirs available from cheap replicas to famous works of art. This modern side of Indonesia is perfectly complimented by the traditional dances and ceremonies that take place in the city, giving travellers a real sense of history and allowing them to trace the local culture from its early roots right up until the present day. Further insight into the Indonesian culture can be found in the areas that surround the city where ancient temples stand as a testament of architectural skill and religious belief. As well as providing a unique cultural experience Ubud is also one of the islands most beautiful regions. This incredible experience will be topped off by your work at a project outside of Ubud where you will be teaching English to disabled people from the surrounding villages.
