Highlights

Jordan is located on the edge of Asia, Africa and Europe. Because of this centralized location, Jordan has been home to some of mankind's earliest settlements and villages. Many of the world's great civilizations can still be seen today. The modern and beautiful capital, Amman, is a large city with a population almost equal to half the country's population.

As the crossroads of the Middle East, the lands of Jordan and Palestine have served as a strategic nexus connecting Asia, Africa and Europe. Thus, since the dawn of civilization, Jordan's geography has given it an important role to play as a conduit for trade and communications, connecting East and West, North and South. Jordan continues to play this role today.

An estimated 1.2 million people visited Jordan in the millennium year, attracted by the country's stunning landscape, fascinating cultural heritage, and world-class historic sites. Wider international interest will continue to promote Jordanian tourism since it's a young country with a history that dates back to Biblical times. Jordan is a bridge between civilizations, between the desert and the sea, between the east and the west. Built upon layers of history, Jordan is a country of beauty and contradictions. Desert canyons, hills, valleys, castles, the geological phenomena that is Wadi Rum, the Nabatean capital of Petra, to the Red Sea.
