Program Description

RIPPLE Africa- Volunteer Nurses and Doctors

Description

RIPPLE Africa is looking for volunteer nurses and doctors to experience medicine in a rural community setting in Malawi. Healthcare in Malawi is extremely under resourced, and in our district there is just 1 doctor to every 100,000 people, and 1 nurse to every 18,000. RIPPLE Africa volunteer nurses and doctors significantly increase the resources of local healthcare in the area, and split their time volunteering between two local community clinics, and the Chintheche Rural Hospital. Volunteers can also become involved in our public health projects, including assisting in Under 5 community clinics, and our Mal-nourished Children’s Project. Volunteers assist trained Malawian healthcare workers, and are given an induction on arrival after which they can choose the clinic they wish to help.

Highlights

Malawi is known as the “Warm Heart of Africa,” and its people are some of the friendliest you will ever meet. In addition to experiencing medicine in a tropical rural setting, RIPPLE Africa volunteers get to experience life in rural Africa at its very best. Volunteers live in chalet accommodation at Mwaya Beach, a tropical paradise on Malawi’s stunning lake shore, and are firmly imbedded in the heart of the community. You will be hard pressed to find a volunteering experience which is as friendly as ours!

Further Information
Cost Description:

RIPPLE Africa volunteers pay a fee to join the programme, and a typical 12 week placement costs £1200, plus an initial deposit. The fee goes directly towards RIPPLE Africa’s charitable activity, and also covers the cost of accommodation, staff, and project expenses associated with the volunteer’s placement. Volunteers must also cover their own travel expenses, and budget for their own food and drinks costs. A full breakdown of volunteer costs can be found on our website.

Living Arrangements:
RIPPLE Africa volunteers live at Mwaya Beach in specially built chalet accommodation directly facing the waterfront of beautiful Lake Malawi. Chalets are spacious and airy, and volunteers can expect to share their chalet with one or two others, as we have 5 volunteer chalets for an average of about 10 volunteers. There is also a communal kitchen area, and a toilet block with three toilets and two showers. There are hired staff at Mwaya Beach just to look after volunteers, including watchmen, gardeners, staff who look after laundry, and two cooks to prepare food. Mwaya Beach has often been described as paradise, and although it looks like something on a postcard, it is also right in the heart of a welcoming and friendly rural community, so volunteers are never isolated from the people they are there to help.
Travel Arrangements:
Volunteers are responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from Malawi. Volunteer nurses and doctors travel to the various clinics each day from Mwaya Beach. Mwaya Community Clinic is a short walk away, Kachere Health Centre requires a cycle journey, and Chintheche Rural Hospital is a short commute by public mini-bus. Volunteer bicycles are provided.
Application Requirements:
The application process is ongoing throughout the year, and volunteers can apply by downloading the application form on our website. Decisions are usually made within a week or two, and are subject to references and availability.
