Program Description
Travellers Worldwide - Tennis Coaching in New Zealand
Description
You'll have a diverse exposure to this sport by coaching, training and playing with an excellent Tennis Club, and also bringing your sports skills to children in local schools. Here you'll be able to coach Tennis and various other sports to children from all backgrounds, including Maori, South Pacific Islands, and many other nationalities. New Zealand has a great outdoors lifestyle and climate which makes it a lovely place to play outdoor sports like Tennis.
This project provides you with a diverse experience in that your activities will take place in two locations and will also give you the opportunity to coach other sports as well:
- You'll spend your afternoons and evenings coaching and/or training at a Tennis Club in Auckland.
- During the mornings and early afternoons, for about 4-5 hours every day, you'll bring very welcome sports coaching skills in the School Sports project. This project takes place in a school in one of the suburbs of Auckland and here you'll coach athletics plus a variety of other sports to children from the Maori community and other countries.
You'll work with a variety of ages at the club and during the weekend you will have an opportunity to compete yourself and test your abilities against the Kiwis! The club we work with has a very lively social scene and you will be welcomed with open arms.

Day to day was spent at the school, whether it be in helping in the outdoor swimming pool with teaching pupils to swim or within a classroom helping with individuas or groups. The work varied and every day brought its own challenges. Getting a glimpse of how school works in a different part of the World and the subjects they find important and how they are taught was the most interesting part of the experience for me. Days out at the local Tram Museum and at Cricket Tournaments were opportunities to see the children in a new environment and the supervision of them was fun, with groups of children wanting to show off and do their best whilst engaging in different activities.
The other part of life or me were the evenings and weekends. I was staying in a hostel with 15-20 other Travellers, all doing similar courses to myself, this enabled us all to relax or go out in the evenings. Much fun was had and included trips to the various beaches, nights out in Auckland, day trips to the zoo and aquarium and most importantly mini golf! The friends I met there will be friends for life having shared the best experience of my life with them.
If you get the chance, do something wild and volunteer in Auckland. A buzzing city with very nice people and a great culture.
