Interview with Katie Boyer, ProWorld volunteer Peru

GO: Why did you decide to volunteer abroad with ProWorld in Peru?

Katie: I found out about ProWorld in Peru through my university, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Cal Poly has been doing faculty led custom group trips with ProWorld for years. Because it was through my school, I was able to receive lots of college credit while on the ProWorld program.

GO: Describe your day to day activities as a volunteer.

Katie: As a volunteer, we traveled to different rural communities to help with different projects. We built cleaner-burning stoves in homes and communities. The stoves were made in small groups with basic supplies. It takes one day to complete a stove that has lasting economic, environmental and health benefits. We also had time afterward to eat and converse with local families.

GO: How has this experience helped you grow personally and professionally?

Katie: My ProWorld trip led to my completion of a Spanish minor and a Latin American studies minor. I also made life-long friends, learned about myself, another culture and more. I am even interning now at ProWorld's parent company, Intrax, encouraging others to experience and learn from life abroad.

ProWorld was able to place my sister and I in separate volunteer programs, as we have different interests and specialties, but the same home-stay. Our host family was amazing! They were friendly, helpful, interesting and supportive.

My mornings I spent researching different grant opportunities for the library I worked at in the evenings. At 11 I had Spanish lessons for an hour and a half followed by going home for lunch.

I went to the library for 4-7pm and that's where I had the most fun. I've never considered myself good with children but the kids are so happy to be there. They are so happy to have a safe place to go where they can get help, attention, and sometimes a little affection. I couldn't help but enjoy the children's company.

On weekends ProWorld took us to various cultural sites in and around Cusco. Truly and educational experience for me. My only regret is that I didn't have more time.

My experience volunteering with ProPeru will always stand out as some of the most positive months of my life thus far. I worked in Urubamba for 2 months, teaching local middle school students about environmental conservation and English. Between my students and my host family, I made relationships that I will always cherish. A typical day in Uru, as it is affectionately known, usually involved a few hours of volunteer work, followed by a large lunch and good conversation with my host family. After lunch came one-on-one Spanish classes that were more helpful than any class I've taken in college or high school. The rest of the day was usually spent hiking, reading or exploring the city.
ProPeru's volunteer program does an excellent job balancing work and fun, during your stay in Peru, as there are opportunities for weekend trips to local landmarks and Incan ruins. Additionally, I felt that I truly made a positive impact on the students I worked with.

ProPeru actually makes a difference

Volunteering with ProPeru was an awesome experience. With so many other volunteer organizations, the work you're doing oftentimes seems detached from the community...a hollow experience masquerading as a way to help the local community.

This was not the case with ProPeru. The stove project I was a part of was a visibly beneficial project that made a lasting improvement in peoples' lives every single day. The members of the community would repeatedly thank us for the work we were doing, and invite us to their homes for dinner other events. During this program, I was able to experience Peru from the inside by living with a wonderful host family, and also feel as though my trip had made a difference if even in a small way.

ProPeru gave me an excellent first time experience travelling internationally. The staff met me at the airport and was supportive and enthusiastic my entire time there, always willing to help if needed. My host family was great and the project I worked on (cleaner burning stoves) had an immediate impact on the community. Great experience

This program was awesome because unlike a lot of other providers I've looked at I was able to get college credits and volunteer. The projects in the communities were the most memorable and rewarding part of the trip, but my classes were definitely my favorite classes I've had in college as well!

I will never forget my ProWorld volunteer trip

My ProWorld trip to Peru was easily one of the greatest and most memorable times of my life.

Constructing cleaner burning stoves was one of the best, most memorable parts of the trip because we made a contribution to a community in need in a personal way.

Before becoming a volunteer abroad, I had never thought about the effects of indoor air pollution. Clean air and water are basic things we take for granted that everyone deserves access to.

Everyone should open their eyes with an experience volunteering abroad. ProWorld makes it easy to make a difference around the world. ProWorld Peru looks out not only for the volunteers but also the local community. I would recommend the program to everyone.
