South Africa is a fascinating country to volunteer in, one rich in culture and history. It is home to captivating landscapes, exotic animals, sophisticated cities, world-renowned vineyards, famous townships and delicious cuisine. Since being granted independence from The United Kingdom in 1931, South Africa suffered under the brutal system of segregation and apartheid, repealed by Nelson Mandela in 1990. South Africa is now an ethnically diverse country of black African ancestors, European and Asian settlers and mixed race descent. This diversity has resulted in an equally vibrant number of volunteer opportunities.
The difficulties South Africa has faced recently make it a rewarding place to volunteer. South Africa has struggled to recover from the many changes that have developed in the last 20 years. Unemployment is still extremely high, with some living on less than a dollar a day. Townships have begun to improve but poverty is still widespread and the government has failed to successfully redistribute wealth and economic growth. AIDS is still a huge health issue for the nation. The need for volunteers like you is large.
As an international volunteer in South Africa you will have the opportunity to provide the underprivileged population access to better education and healthcare. You will help them fight for their human rights and help them to build an infrastructure of their own. Most volunteer programs are based in and around Cape Town, with some venturing to nearby rural areas.
