Embrace Tanzania: Volunteer Projects in Tanzania

Description

Embrace Tanzania works closely with communities in Zanzibar to bring about social change through education, awareness, and fundraising. We are currently working with primary and secondary schools in Zanzibar to provide much needed support and education. There is a considerable shortage of teachers in Zanzibar and Embrace Tanzania looks to expand educational outreach efforts and provide more resources to children, who are all very eager to learn.

We are also in the midst of opening other outreach programs, such as HIV education, and expanding to other Zanzibar locations.

Interview with Jennica Nichols, volunteer alum

GO: Why did you decide to volunteer with Embrace Tanzania in Tanzania?

Jennica: I just finished my undergrad at university and was looking to celebrate by fulfilling a life goal of volunteering in Africa. I looked at A LOT of organizations, but found that they were outrageous expensive (I am a poor student after all!) and/or seemed haphazard (I wanted to make sure I was contributing to a project that would have lasting impacts and was sustainable by the organization... as my first volunteer job had not been and this was rather upsetting).

I emailed Embrace and found they took the time to answer each of my questions, as well as added a little humour (which I appreciated). In addition, the fact that they are located on Zanzibar instead of the mainland was also a major draw as who wouldn't want to volunteer in paradise? In retrospect, I definitely made the right decision!

GO: Describe your day to day activities as a volunteer.

Jennica: Started with a delicious breakfast with everyone then walked the 40m to school (talk about nice morning commute!). I was a teacher at the largest school I've ever seen (after the initial shock, you fall in love with everything). It's a primary and secondary school combined! Bububu school has a split day with 2500 children in the morning and then another 2500 children in the afternoon. The classes are in big blocks so you will teach two subjects a day, but what classes varies by the day. When you get there, the staff at Embrace and the school help you find a schedule that works best with your skills, what you want you to do, and the needs of the school.

I taught my first class in the morning from 7-11:30 (I taught biology to Form 3s and 4s) - so I would arrive a few minutes early to chat with the teachers and then class would start....the morning would ZOOM by. I would head back to the house and catch up with all the volunteers over lunch (a few of us would alternate cooking - I introduced peanut butter and banana toasties as almost no one had ever had one before!). Then its back to school to teach the afternoon classes (Biology and General Science to elementary and Forms 2), they tend to run from 1pm till around 6pm after that the volunteers head back to the Embrace house and either have dinner there or go into town to one of the restaurants.

The weeks are pretty standard with morning and afternoon projects running throughout the day. The evenings and weekends are free to play... there is so many different things to do on the weekend that you'll have a hard time deciding (snorkeling, full moon parties, the food market all must be done at least twice!). Also, make sure to see the slavery trade tribute in Stone Town!

Embrace Tanzania volunteer program in Tanzania
A school in Tanzania where volunteers worked
GO: How has this experience helped you grow personally and professionally?

Jennica: This experience had a profound effect on my future - I knew I did not want to do molecular biology in my last year, but had come so far I figured it was worth getting the degree. My experience with Embrace furthered my passion for health equity and highlighted the importance of public health in daily living. It is largely for this reason that I am now working at a hospital in Toronto on the evaluation of complex health initiatives in Canada, and have applied to the University of Toronto's Master's in Public Health.

On a personal level, my experience taught me how influential culture is when defining the world around you. It has made me profoundly grateful of the unique gift I was given when I won the birth lottery (being born in a first world country like Canada) - the ability to live in a society where the tools exist to help me achieve my dreams. This notion (maybe it should have been more innate, but I had never questioned it and always taken it for granted) has become a strong source of passion and drive for me since returning. I don't know how you could not fall in love with Tanzania.

Embrace Tanzania NGO is an organised, focussed and dedicated organisation. I have volunteered in Tanzania before and the organisation I was with was some what different. Embrace Tanzania's projects, the accommodation and the staff were all very welcoming. The school needs so much help i couldn't explain my overwhelming feeling of sadness know that 3 months of just me would not be able to change as much as I first thought i could do, that's why Bububu school needs as many volunteers as possible. I would recommend Embrace Tanzania to anyone, of any background and of any age. The house is brilliant, far better than my previous experience! The staff are incredibly helpful and hard working, and the teachers of the school appreciate you more than you ever thought was possible. I spent 3 months teaching the teachers English. I had 2 classes held in the school, one at 9am and one at 4pm, and at 1pm I had a group of local boys come from the village to learn english too. We held debates, quizzes, conversations etc, so my day was full! Embrace house is so close to Stone Town, the bus stop is right up the road, and the journey into the heart of Stone Town is only 15 minutes. Going into town for dinner, happy hour and a boogy became a regular plan for the weekends, and during the full moon we'd travel up to Kendwa together for the full moon party - FYI, do NOT miss out on this party!!!

My experience volunteering in Zanzibar was more fulfilling than I ever expected it could be. I became a member of the school, a home and the community. I worked hard and played hard. I can not recommend Embrace Tanzania enough. I recommend to take a few minutes to browse through their webpage - the photo's of Zanzibar are enough to make you want to go there!

Well done Embrace Tanzania, you're all doing such a great job, and thank you for everything.

I will be back!!

I spent one month with Embrace writing a research paper as part of my medical degree. It was an incredible experience and I would recommend embrace to anyone looking for great projects and a great time. The accommodation is brilliant and a short bus ride from stone town. All the staff were so helpful and I wouldn't of been able to do my project without their help so thank you guys! It was well organised and a great combination of working hard at the school but having time to see Zanzibar and socialise with other volunteers. I will be going back next year and would encourage anyone looking for a different experience to choose this NGO that actually cares about the projects and the people of zanzibar!

Volunteering in Paradise - what could be better?

I had the greatest volunteer experience here - and definitely was sad when it was time to come back to Canada.

This was my second time volunteering in Tanzania and this experience was exponentially better than my first (which was located just south of Dar es Salaam on the main land). They send you information before you come to help with your transition - lots of useful tips and even a few must-knows with regard to the local language (Swahili). They pick you up from the airport and take you to the volunteer house - which is so nice as it is a bit overwhelming when you first get off the plane and realize you aren't in Kansas anymore. That being said, you quickly adjust and never want to leave!! They give you an orientation when you first arrive so you know where things are and to help you get familiar with your new home - SO HELPFUL!

The staff is absolutely amazing - they have both Westerns and locals to answer all your questions, help you with everything and anything you need and work with you to help make your time there a perfect mix of meaningful work & fun. The founder and organizer is greatest guy with the biggest heart - he cares very deeply about the local community and his projects leading to a volunteer experience that makes a difference (his projects have significant impact and, maybe even more importantly, are set up to be sustainable so your efforts are continued long after you leave). He is also extremely concerned about his volunteers and works to make sure you have the greatest time (he has a very comprehensive list of awesome activities to do so there is something to fit into any budget... and he is done a lot of negotiations so he has the best deals on the island!). The volunteer house is also much nicer than I was expecting and I felt extremely comfortable & safe there. Having breakfast made for you every morning is also a treat (and damn delicious!).

The environment is amazing - the island is breath-taking and there is SO many different things to see and do when you are not volunteering (going to a full moon party and the food market are MUSTs!). Almost everyone I met in Zanzibar was extremely friendly and loved to talked! I met so many interesting people!! I never felt concerned for my safety. It's nice because you have most of the afternoon and evenings off (depending on your project) to explore, make friends with other volunteers & local people and relax (the beaches on the island are STUNNING!).

This review is much longer than I anticipated (opps! Good on you for keeping with it!)- I just cannot say enough great things about my time with Embrace Tanzania. If you are looking for a volunteer experience where you will be making a difference in a safe and extremely fun environment, look no further.

If you do go, I'd recommend bringing a disposable camera as the water is crystal clear and(if you choose to) the snorkling is fabulous!

ENJOY!
