Program Description
Cross-Cultural Solutions - Volunteer Abroad in Thailand
Description
Volunteering abroad is the opportunity of a lifetime, and our flexible short-term programs let you design your ideal experience in Thailand. Volunteer from 2 weeks to 3 months in your choice of 12 countries, in meaningful projects that will let you work side-by-side with local people and experience the Thai culture like never before.
As an international volunteer with Cross-Cultural Solutions, you're making a positive contribution, by sharing in the goals of a Thai community that warmly welcomes you. You'll gain new perspectives and insight into the culture and yourself.
Highlights
The Community. Thonburi, the capital of Thailand until 1785, is now mainly a residential area. Just outside of Bangkok, it offers the comforts and tranquility of a small town to volunteers, while still being convenient for the many urban work placements. In Thonburi, you will witness the strong community links that are a result of the importance placed on personal relationships in Thailand. Thonburi's beautiful landscape of vibrant flowers and canals are also a great contrast to the bustling streets and skyscrapers of the city. As you walk through the wide streets of Thonburi, visiting the nearby Wat Arun (the Temple of Dawn) or the Internet cafe, you will be greeted by everyone you pass.
The people. The Thai people embody the sentiments of Buddhism. They value friendliness, and you will always be greeted with a smile. Having fun (sanuk), and maintaining a calm equilibrium (jai yen) are of the utmost importance. In fact, raising your voice or any display of anger is considered extremely rude. Respect is given to everyone, no matter their social standing. In Thailand, you will have to be proactive. Out of respect, Thai people are unlikely to tell you what to do. Developing relationships is the best way to immerse yourself in Thai culture. Once you take the first step, the people you meet will welcome you, sharing their most intimate thoughts and feelings and displaying their endless generosity.

It was a great program working with many different schools to help the students with English. They all were so appreciative and the teachers and faculty was happy to see so many of us there giving of our time. We had 80 to 100 students through our classes a day.
I have volunteered in Costa Rica, Thailand and Peru with CCS and they are so professional and caring. There are other groups going overseas but they don't offer the same things. You do have to make the comparison. NOT EVEN CLOSE !!!!
When our bus pulled out for the day, the students would line up along the driveway and reach for our hands (sticking out the window) so they could say "thank you" and each one had a beautiful smile shining through their tears.

My time in Thailand is difficult to put into words. I volunteered in a day care center, where each day brought a smile to my face. We arrived to a sea of beautiful, happy & eager faces, from both the children and the staff. We had alot of fun, while trying to teach the group English through reading, conversation, and music. Our time was met with alot of caring and support from Cross Cultural Solutions, who were very sensitive to all of our needs. They were very professional, as well as open to all of the volunteers during our time there. As much as we thought we were giving, the impact of what we received is hard to describe. I don't really remember encountering any major difficulties. Getting lost, or having trouble with the language, was all part of the experience. I met wonderful people along the way, and will never forget this very special and unique time abroad.

My summer in Bangkok, Thailand with Cross-Cultural Solutions was the best decision I ever made in my life. I met amazing friends, and I learned life lessons.
I volunteered at a daycare center with three year-olds and I also volunteered in a hospital.
Highlights included the staff, the house, the city, and the social activities.
The only difficulty was the language barrier, but what a great experience!
