Program Description

GVN - Vietnam Volunteer Program

Description

The Global Volunteer Network currently has volunteer opportunities available through our partner organizations in Vietnam.

Volunteers have the chance to help care for children in orphanages, and teach English in universities, colleges, and language centers in Da Nang (Danang), a beautiful coastal city in central Vietnam. This program will give you a chance to make an important contribution to the people of Vietnam, and to gain an in depth experience of the country and its culture that will stay with you the rest of your life.

Interview with Anne Stuart Mitchener, volunteer alum

GO: Tell us a little about yourself.

Anne: I am from Charlotte, North Carolina. I currently attend Wofford Colelge in Spartanburg, South Carolina and am working to finish up my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. I first volunteered in the summer of 2009 when I was 18 years old. I am now 21 years old and go back to Vietnam as much as I can. It holds a special place in my heart and I have GVN to thank for helping me find that piece of my heart.

Anne had a great time volunteering with children
GO: Why did you decide to volunteer with GVN in Vietnam?

Anne: I had heard about GVN through a few friends and knew someone who had been to Vietnam with GVN the summer before. I really wanted to go abroad for the summer and immerse myself into something completely unknown and unfamiliar so I chose Vietnam. It was an amazing experience and I am SO glad I chose GVN Vietnam.

GO: Describe your day to day activities as a volunteer.

Anne: I have been to Vietnam through GVN twice. The first time I went I was in the Tuy Hoa placement which is a small fishing village about 8 hours from DaNang. Volunteers were all placed in a house together and every day we alternated going to various placements in Tuy Hoa. Our placements were: Social Protection Center (SPC), Highschool, Little School, Fishing Village School, College and a Special Needs school.

SPC was an orphanage for kids with Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus and other life altering diseases. We would go get the kids out of bed and do physical therapy and just play with them and help out the house-mothers. At the High school and College we taught English classes. Little School and Fishing Village school were elementary schools we went to teach basic English to the kids and provide them with a healthy snack and milk as well as just play fun games with them. At the special needs school, majority of the kids were deaf and very interested in art. We taught art classes and helped them express themselves through various projects. Every night, all of the volunteers went together to teach an English class at a building downtown to the local street children and provided them with a healthy snack, we called this “Home of Affection.”

GO: What advice do you have for future volunteers?

Anne: If you are debating whether or not to volunteer through GVN, or any program really… DO IT. It was the best experience of my life and I am truly a completely changed person because of it.

As far as advice for your actual time volunteering I would say don’t be timid or shy, go into it with full force and make the biggest difference you can with the short time you are there for. Time goes by fast, and you don’t want to feel any sort of regrets.

GO: How has this experience helped you grow personally and professionally?

Anne: Volunteering with GVN Vietnam has completely changed my life. I first volunteered with them in the summer of 2009. It is now 2012 and I am still close with the people I volunteered with, or even some local friends I met while in Vietnam and continue to go back to Vietnam regularly. When people ask me to describe my volunteer experience all I can say is that it has changed me forever. My decision to volunteer summer of 2009 was just to do something fun for the summer; I had NO IDEA what an impact it was going to have on my life.

Professionally it has also impacted my future. I am a psychology major, focusing on clinical and child psychology. After undergrad and grad school I hope to return to Vietnam and help the kids there even more. I also hope to one day work for a non profit or a youth volunteer program.

Best Experience of my Life

I first volunteered with GVN in Vietnam when I was 18 years old. I was fresh out of high school and was about to embark on a trip of a lifetime. I had no idea what to expect and had never traveled abroad alone before. As my plane left the ground at home in America I immediately became nervous about the journey I was about to start. After flight delays, illnesses and one hell of a long flight I was finally in DaNang where I was to be picked up by GVN. The second I was entered the house in DaNang all of my anxiety went away and I immediately felt at home. Little did I know I was beginning a life changing experience. I would recommend GVN to anyone. I have since been back to vietnam twice and am about to go back this summer for a third time. Vietnam holds a special place in my heart and I have GVN to thank for that.

I was a naive eighteen year old girl who had just graduated from high school and had no idea what awaited me. I had never traveled abroad alone before and I was nervous about what awaited me. I ended up on a plane to Vietnam, scared and unsure of what awaited me. Volunteering with GVN in Vietnam was the most amazing experience of my life. Since volunteering with them the first time three years ago, I have been back two more times and am about to go back again this summer. GVN was the best thing I have ever done with my life and has shaped me into the young woman I am today. I wouldn't trade my experience for anything. I highly recommend this program to ANYONE and EVERYONE who is interested in going abroad!

The operations staff in Tuy Hoa were fantastic. So welcoming and empathetic and incredibly hard working. The staff in NZ were great too but sometimes a little slow to reply to requests for information or help once i was out in Vietnam. I could have done without the 40 odd emails that were sent to me by GVN prior to departure...not enough time to read them all! The main difficulty i encountered were lack of other volunteers to bond with. There were only 2 volunteers there (a couple) who were not very social and spent most of their time locked in their room. Thank goodness for the Vietnamese staff who were great company! Overall a fantastic experience and even though i initially felt thrown in at the deep end (thought i would be looking after babies but ended up mostly teaching) i am really glad i did it and it has inspired me to find a job within the chairty sector. Keep up the great work GVN!

Vietnam - Love you long time

I went with GVN to vietnam back in 2005 when the program was in it's early stages. Now in 2011 6 years later I still think of the kids and my time in vietnam and the people that I spent that time with. The housing was basic in NZ standards, but high in Vietnam. We were well looked after, driven to our placements, all our meals paid for and the weekends off. All the staff of GVN were amazing and the other poeple from all around the world were fantastic as we all had the same reasons for being there, doing our little part for the better of the world. GVN is a great way to back pack around the world with a differnce and the feeling that you are getting ivolved and learning more of the society you are in than just travelling through. I still think of the kids and wonder where they are now, and how the programis going. I miss you all and will love you all forever, the experience will remain with me till the end of my time. I just hope that I can do it all again in the future.

I participated in this program in 2005 and had an amazing time - I have been involved ever since and every time I go back to visit it is a great experience. Everything is well planned and organized and nothing was a problem. A fantastic experience that everyone should do
